Panel Discussion on the Impact of Digital Technologies and Automation Gathers Experts from Three Millennium Nuclei

The Millennium Nuclei LM2C2, Nudos, and Fair joined together to hold a panel discussion on Thursday, August 10, on digital technologies, automation, inequalities, and labor mismatches. This was in the context of all the social, cultural, and economic challenges faced by society with the rapid advancement of the digital world.

From the Millennium Nucleus for Labor Market Mismatch (LM2C2), the speakers were Mauricio Tejada and Benjamín Villena. Tejada, an economist and professor at Diego Portales University, provided a historical overview of various technological changes, and the questions and new prospects that arose with them. He also addressed the labor informality brought about by these evolutions, where new opportunities are opened in times of unemployment, but also exclude workers from social protection networks and regulations concerning the quality of the work environment.

Villena, an economist and professor at Andrés Bello University, shared research results on labor market changes, especially with the SABE project, which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to classify job advertisements, understanding changes in the requirements for education and minimum work experience.

The Nucleus Nudos, studying Digital Inequalities and Opportunities, featured participation from Macarena Bonhomme and Teresa Correa, the alternate director of this space. Bonhomme, a sociologist and professor at Autónoma University, spoke about Platform Economics, addressing changes in work patterns, such as working where and when desired, and new ways of insertion and working conditions, which are more flexible but limited.

Correa, a journalist and professor at Diego Portales University, discussed the increased access to opportunities provided by social networks and digital platforms, such as searching for new offers or telecommuting. However, she emphasized the unequal distribution of digital skills, pointing to a significant future challenge.

Finally, from the Nucleus Fair, Claudia López and Teresa Correa attended, the latter also being part of this team. López, an engineer and professor at Federico Sta. María Technical University, called for recognition of the complete team behind the development of AI, in the generation and labeling of data, content moderation, among others. She also highlighted the critical role of today's society, demanding responsibility and ethical sense behind the type of artificial intelligence being created.
