35 Students Begin Prestigious Program at the 2025 LM²C² Summer School

Santiago, January 2025 – Thirty-five outstanding 11th and 12th-grade students from across Chile have been selected to participate in the second edition of the Summer School, an academic initiative led by the Millennium Nucleus for the Study of Labor Market Mismatches (LM²C²), directed by economist Felipe Balmaceda.

A High-Level Academic Program

The program runs from January 6 to 10 at the San Joaquín Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Campus. Over one week, students will participate in lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on activities designed to explore key principles of economics, modern research methods, measurement and evaluation techniques, and the role of educational credentials in the labor market.

The content is delivered by leading scholars from Pontificia Universidad Católica, Universidad de Chile, and Universidad Andrés Bello, covering topics such as: Principles of Economics and Market Analysis (Felipe Balmaceda) Modern Research Methods and Experimental Tools in the Social Sciences (Tania Hutt and Mauricio Bucca) Development Challenges, Growth, and Inequality (Mauricio Tejada) Public Policy Evaluation and the Importance of Data in Decision-Making (Paola Bordón) Education and the Labor Market: The Role of Credentials (Andrea Canales) Productivity and Evidence-Based Policy Design (National Commission for Productivity)

The program will conclude with a practical workshop and final exam, allowing students to apply what they've learned and reflect on the economic and social challenges of the future.

A Transformative Experience

In addition to academic training, all selected students receive a full scholarship, which includes transportation, meals, learning materials, access to university facilities, and personalized tutoring. 

At the program's opening, LM²C² Director Felipe Balmaceda emphasized that the initiative "not only seeks to ignite interest in economics and social sciences and aims to equip students with essential tools like logical reasoning and critical thinking. Our goal is to inspire and prepare the leaders of tomorrow," he stated.

A Commitment to Nurturing Young Talent

The 2025 Summer School reflects LM²C²'s deep commitment to supporting young talent and transferring scientific knowledge to society.

This initiative is part of the Public Engagement Program (PME) of the Millennium Science Initiative, led by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID). Its goal is to connect research centers with various sectors—educational, public, and private—extending the impact of knowledge beyond academia.

In this context, the Summer School bridges cutting-edge research in economics and social sciences and the next generation of students, bringing them closer to the dynamics and challenges of the labor market.

Founded in 2022, the LM²C² research center specializes in analyzing labor market mismatches, their causes, and their consequences. Its goal is to contribute to public policy formulation and national economic development.
