35 Students from Across Chile Join the Second Edition of the “Summer School” Organized by the Millennium Nucleus LM²C²

  • Thirty-five students from various regions of Chile have been selected to participate in an intensive program combining master classes, interactive workshops, and hands-on activities. This initiative, organized by the Millennium Nucleus for the Study of Labor Market Mismatches (LM²C²), addresses critical topics such as the principles of economics, modern research methodologies, measurement and evaluation techniques, and the role of educational credentials in the labor market. By fostering logical reasoning and critical thinking, the program aims to equip young minds to tackle future economic and social challenges.

  • Supported by the Millennium Science Initiative (ANID), this effort underscores LM²C²’s commitment to talent development and the dissemination of scientific knowledge to society, connecting emerging generations with labor market realities and advancing social progress.

Santiago, January 2025. Thirty-five high school juniors and seniors from across Chile have been selected to participate in the second edition of the “Summer School,” an academic initiative led by the Millennium Nucleus LM²C², under the direction of economist and academic Felipe Balmaceda.

This year’s program, running from January 6 to January 10 at the San Joaquín campus of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, follows the success of the inaugural edition held in 2024 at the Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello. The Summer School aims to bridge the gap between secondary and university education by sparking interest in economics and social sciences among young students.

A Comprehensive and Cutting-Edge Program

The Summer School offers a rich academic experience through a blend of lectures, interactive workshops, and practical sessions. The program explores a range of critical topics:

• Principles of Economics: Felipe Balmaceda introduces students to the fundamentals of economic analysis, fostering an understanding of market dynamics and decision-making processes.

Modern Research Techniques: Professor Tania Hutt covers experimental and computational methods in social research, while Professor Mauricio Bucca guides students through data analysis and R programming—key tools in contemporary economics and social sciences.

Challenges of Economic Development: Professor Mauricio Tejada examines obstacles and opportunities for regional economic growth, emphasizing the interplay between development and inequality.

Measurement and Evaluation: Professor Paola Bordón highlights the importance of measurement in shaping effective public policies and conducting impactful social research.

Education and the Labor Market: Professor Andrea Canales explores the role of educational credentials in employment and their influence on inequality.

Data-Driven Policies: A special session by the National Productivity Evaluation Commission emphasizes the value of data and measurement in crafting effective public policies.

The program culminates in a practical workshop and a final exam, allowing students to consolidate their learning and reflect on the week’s insights.

An Enriching Experience

Participants in the 2025 Summer School benefit from a full scholarship covering transportation, meals, materials, access to university facilities, and personalized mentoring. Beyond academics, students will interact with leading scholars from the Pontificia Universidad Católica, Universidad de Chile, and Universidad Andrés Bello, building valuable networks and exploring their academic and professional potential.

“Through this program, we aim not only to ignite curiosity about economics and social sciences but also to empower students with critical thinking and logical reasoning skills to address future challenges,” said Felipe Balmaceda, director of LM²C². “This experience is designed to inspire and prepare the leaders of tomorrow.”

A Commitment to Future Generations

The 2025 Summer School is a tangible expression of the Millennium Nucleus LM²C²’s mission to nurture young talent and foster the societal impact of scientific knowledge

This initiative is part of the Proyección al Medio Externo (PME) program, a core element of the Millennium Science Initiative, which connects research institutions with various sectors—educational, public, and private—extending its influence beyond academia.

By bridging advanced research in economics and social sciences with new generations of students, the Summer School serves as a platform to engage youth with the complexities of labor market dynamics and socio-economic challenges.

Established in November 2022, the Millennium Nucleus LM²C² is part of the Millennium Science Initiative under the National Research and Development Agency (ANID). This research center focuses on analyzing the causes and consequences of labor market mismatches, as reflected in its full name, Millennium Nucleus for Labor Market Mismatch: Causes and Consequences (LM²C²).
